Bob is the General Counsel at Amazon Web Services. He manages a worldwide team responsible for all legal and regulatory issues relating to AWS. This includes working with AWS service teams as they create innovative new products for the cloud, software licensing, open source policy, hardware & chip design, data center construction & operation, green power projects, supply chain, and the creation of a worldwide telecommunications backbone infrastructure. He spends significant time working with governments to establish appropriate regulatory frameworks and data protection standards to enable rapid, safe, and secure adoption of the cloud across all industries.
Prior to Amazon, Bob served in numerous business and legal roles in technology companies. He spent a large part of his career in the digital media technology and services business at RealNetworks, Inc., eventually serving as President and CEO. Before his appointment as CEO, Bob was the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary as well as the Executive Vice President for Corporate Development. He has led the acquisition of many companies in the technology, digital media and games markets, and worked extensively with European and American governments on digital media related issues, technology & antitrust.
Bob clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit and worked at the law firm Sidley Austin, and IBM during its resurgence in the late ‘90’s before he joined RealNetworks. Bob holds a J.D., Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was an editor of the Michigan Law Review.
